Proud Moment for ICDA- Prof Chadha @ UN

Head of Department of Psychology at Delhi University, Professor NK Chadha, will represent India at the United Nations 20th anniversary of the International Year of Family. Chadha will be the only Indian professor and
probably the first one who will present a paper on good practices of family policies making.
Chadha has been carrying out extensive research work on the joint family system in India.Through his various studies and research he has laid emphasis on the values and needs of a joint family system and that has been critical of the old age homes.
Chadha, who is among the panelists at the UN, will be speaking on inter-generational relationships between grand parents and grand children. “The relationship that a grand child shares with his grand parent is phenomenal in binding the family in one. There is a strong hidden inter-dependence between these
two generations and it is only in the joint families that such relationships survive,” says Chadha.
The National Policy for Senior citizens that was passed by the Parliament of India in
1999 and the Maintenance of Parents and Senior Citizen Act 2007 will be among the few things that Chadha will share with the UN. “The Indian Parliament has made several polices to make lives of senior citizens comfortably. However, it is very unfortunate that many of us in India, too, are not aware of these acts,” says Chadha. The professor will be using the platform at the United Nations to highlight these accomplishments of the Indian Parliamentary system.
“We in India have excellent policies to support a joint family system. At the UN, I will be talking about these Indian policies. If the UN wants, they can adopt it as it makes its own guidelines for the world,” said Chadha.
The meeting that is being organised by the Division for Social Policy and Development of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs has called upon exprets from across the globe to present their opinions and recommendations regarding good practices in family policy making, work family balance, poverty, social integration. The UN will be observing 2014 as the International Year of the Family and the report for the same will be presented to the 68th General Assembly meeting of the United Nations. Chadha will be speaking at New York on the same
from May 15-17.
